Why does The Grapefather grow Primitivo instead of the more well-known Zinfandel?

Italian Primitivo and California Zinfandel are genetically linked. So if you like one, you’ll like the other. Zinfandel may be better known, but Nello's goal from the start has been to produce "The Best Italian Wines Under the California Sun." His Italian kin would never drink Zin!
Primitivo comes from Puglia in Southern Italy near the heel of the "boot." It has a less peppery flavor than Zinfandel and lower acidity, which many find pleasing. It carries generous flavors of berries and plums, a subtle sweetness, and a smooth mouth feel with a long soft finish.
Once you've enjoyed Nello Olivo's Primitivo, you might come to think of Zinfandel as a less sophisticated cousin and Primitivo the relative you want to stay for long visits. Well, that's Nello. He promises real wine every time.
